James Peng

Founder and CEO

Dr. Peng is an entrepreneur and leader in the autonomous driving industry. He is passionate about bringing great people together to solve challenging problems in future mobility. Under his leadership, Pony.ai has grown into a global leader in autonomous driving.

Prior to co-founding Pony.ai, Dr. Peng worked at Baidu and Google for 11 years and received the Google Founders’ Award. Dr. Peng holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and a B.S. from Tsinghua University. In 2025, he was named to the TIME100 AI list.

Tiancheng Lou

Founder and CTO

Commonly known by his handle “ACRush” within the programming community, Dr. Lou is an 11-year medalist of the TopCoder competitions and a two-time champion of the global programming competition Google Code Jam.

Dr. Lou is committed to advancing technology that improves the safety and efficiency of future mobility. He began his career at Google X, working on autonomous driving technology, and later became the youngest T10 engineer at Baidu’s Autonomous Driving Division.

Dr. Lou holds a Ph.D. and a B.S. from Tsinghua University. He graduated from the founding class of Tsinghua University’s prestigious computer science program, known as the Yao Class, founded by Turing Award laureate Dr. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao.

Haojun Wang

Co-founder and CFO

As a founding member of Pony.ai, Dr. Haojun Wang has played key roles across multiple stages of the company’s development. He previously led the Map and Localization module for autonomous driving and served as Head of the US Site and Head of the Shanghai R&D Center. As Chief Financial Officer, he is responsible for corporate financing, financial planning and management, and human resources.

Prior to joining Pony.ai, Dr. Wang worked at IBM Silicon Valley Lab and Baidu’s US R&D Center, where he focused on database engine and big data information system development. He was also an early member of the team that led the development of Baidu’s autonomous driving Map and Localization system.

Dr. Wang holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California and a B.S. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Andrew Yao

Chief Adviser

A world-renowned computer scientist, Dr. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao is the only Chinese recipient of the Turing Award. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Yao currently serves as Dean of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University and Dean of Tsinghua University’s College of AI.

In 2018, Dr. Yao joined Pony.ai as Chief Adviser, providing guidance on core autonomous driving technologies, frontier AI research, and the company’s strategic development.

Dr. Yao holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University.

2016

Pony.ai was founded.

2017

Launched our first-generation autonomous driving system and Robotaxi.
Secured autonomous driving testing permit in California and commenced public-road testing.

2018

Deployed China’s first regular autonomous driving test fleet, initiating road tests in Guangzhou and Beijing.
Launched the 3rd-generation autonomous driving system and the PonyAlpha vehicle.
Introduced PonyPilot, China’s first autonomous ride-hailing service (Robotaxi).

2019

Expanded into the autonomous truck (Robotruck) sector, bringing smart logistics into commercial operation.
Launched California’s first public-facing autonomous mobility service.
Introduced the 4th-generation autonomous driving system and the PonyAlpha 2.0 vehicle.

2020

Secured a $400 million investment from Toyota, deepening our strategic partnership.
Launched the 5th-generation autonomous system, PonyAlpha X, and rolled out a fleet of 100 Lexus Robotaxis.
Expanded public Robotaxi operations in Beijing and Guangzhou.

2021

Began fully driverless testing in China.
Began commercial charging for public autonomous mobility services for the first time.
Established Cyantron Logistics, a joint venture with Sinotrans, to provide smart logistics solutions.
Completed China’s first public-highway tests for autonomous trucks.

2022

Launched the 6th-generation autonomous system and vehicle — the world’s first Robotaxi equipped with automotive-grade LiDAR.
Became the first autonomous driving company in China to secure both taxi and freight road transport operation licenses.
Commenced commercial operations for autonomous freight services.
Fully deployed Robotaxi services across China’s Tier-1 cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
Introduced the 3rd-generation autonomous truck system and partnered with SANY Heavy Truck to manufacture smart heavy-duty trucks.
Began fully driverless testing across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

2023

Released and delivered multiple models of the “Pony Fangzai” domain controller to clients.
Established Zhuifeng, a joint venture with Toyota China and GAC Toyota, to manufacture and deploy 1,000 bZ4X Robotaxis.
Began commercial charging for fully driverless public mobility services.ed high-speed and expressway Robotaxi services in Tier-1 cities, connecting major transit hubs such as airports and high-speed rail stations.
Began testing for autonomous truck platooning in China.
Expanded our global footprint to the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, securing testing licenses in multiple new regions.

2024

Fully deployed driverless mobility services across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
Partnered with BAIC BJEV to deploy a fleet of 1,000 ARCFOX Alpha T5 Robotaxis.
Listed on NASDAQ, becoming the world’s first publicly traded Robotaxi company.
Formed a strategic partnership with GAC AION to launch a fleet of 1,000 AION V Robotaxis.
Began driverless testing for autonomous truck platooning.

2025

Began fully driverless testing on highways and expressways.
Became the first in China to bring Robotaxi services into the downtown cores of Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
Hosted the world premiere of three 7th-generation mass-produced Robotaxi models and unveiled “Project Kunlun,” a 1,000-unit mass-production plan.
Became the first in China to launch 24/7, all-weather autonomous driving testing and services in Tier-1 cities.
Achieved China’s first commercial operations for fully driverless ride-hailing across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
Rolled 7th-generation Robotaxis off the production line, initiating commercial driverless operations in Tier-1 cities.
